Hiring a Doula - By Karlee Thompson

Hiring a Doula - By Karlee Thompson

So you know you want a doula to support you for your pregnancy, birth and post partum journey. What’s next? It's time to book in some interviews. Most doulas will have a free “getting to know you” appointment, it’s important to go into this with both your head and your heart, ask the questions that are important to you and also get a feeling for the doula.

Interviewing doulas when you're pregnant can be a bit daunting, but it's also a chance for you to take control of your birth experience and step into your power. Hiring a doula that aligns with your values is important, as this will ensure that you are feeling safe and supported throughout your pregnancy. Here are some questions to ask, tips for narrowing it down.

Questions to ask:

  • Can you tell me about your doula training and experience?
  • How do you support families during labour and delivery?
  • Can you walk me through a typical birth that you have supported?
  • How do you handle unexpected situations during birth?
  • Can you provide references or testimonials from previous clients?
  • How do you communicate with medical staff during labour and delivery?
  • What is your availability and on-call schedule?
  • What are your fees, do you offer payment plans?

Narrowing it down: Trust your instincts and go with the doula who feels like the best fit for you. Don't be afraid to ask follow-up questions or to clarify anything that may be unclear. Consider your individual needs and preferences, such as location, communication style, and approach to birth.

The importance of matching values: Your doula is your advocate and support system during one of the most powerful and transformative experiences of your life. Finding a doula who shares your values and beliefs, whether they be spiritual or not, can help ensure a smoother and more fulfilling birth experience. Your doula should understand and honour your birth philosophy. Having this layer of support will leave you feeling safe and support as well and confident and powerful. Taking the time to interview and select the right doula for you is a wonderful opportunity to take control of your birth experience and truly step into your power. Remember to trust your instincts, ask the questions, and find a doula who aligns with your values. This will help you feel confident and supported on your journey to motherhood.
